Smart Fire: The Challenges and Opportunities in Using IoT for Fire Safety
Bee Hayes-Thakore, in conversation with Jan Olsen, RPMAnetworks on how facility owners can leverage smart fire systems as a starting point for building automation.
Fires are fiercely destructive and, when not regulated in time, threaten human life and can damage or destroy valuable property within minutes. In the past year alone, approximately 784 fire-related incidents were reported in the UAE. Uncontrolled home fires claim many lives each year. Sixty-two percent of reported home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms or no smoke alarms at all.
The best precaution against fires are working fire alarm systems. Most of us will be familiar with these in our homes, and with more sophisticated systems integrated into emergency exit routing at our workplaces. Even still, many houses and facilities undergo significant damage from fires, despite having alarms, because of sensors that are inefficient or of unsatisfactory working quality.
IoT has an opportunity to tremendously improve this safety-critical element of our building real-estate. Often the challenge is for facility managers how to modernize their buildings with smarter systems that offer these advantages. RPAMnetworks’ CTO Jan Olsen joins us in conversation to cover a few questions that we will explore in further depth at a joint webinar on the 17th of September.
Bee: How can RPMAnetworks help facility managers who are looking to find a key starting point for their buildings to leverage IoT and smart fire systems?
Jan: RPMAnetworks manufactures cutting-edge smart fire systems, setting new standards in smart smoke alarm systems. RPMAnetworks Smart Fire sensors are always connected and fully integrated to detect smoke instantly. In this way, the Smart Fire solution simplifies the journey to automation and helps facility owners generate insights, cut operation expenses, reduce maintenance, and boost the lifespans of deployed devices.
Bee: How does RPMAnetworks take advantage of Pelion IoT Platform?
Jan: The unique RPMAnetworks Smart Fire solution integrates with the Pelion IoT Platform, an advanced system for managing smart devices in the cloud, which enables monitoring the proper functioning of sensors and connecting directly with the Civil Defense Command & Control Center to provide a timely response in case of emergencies. RPMAnetworks’s joint offering with Pelion takes advantage of the Pelion Edge gateway, which lets facility owners leverage existing smart building automation devices and infrastructure based on legacy equipment and protocols.
Bee: What are the different components of RPMAnetworks’ smart fire systems?
Jan: Smart fire detectors offer protection to fire while minimizing the rate of false alarms. Smart fire sirens and alarms help to ensure safety of occupants. So our solution addresses mitigation of spread and how health and safety of occupants is managed as well as remote console capabilities needed for this. The components of the Smart Smoke Alarm System include:
- Wireless heat detectors
- Wireless outdoor sirens
- Wireless smoke detectors
- Wireless carbon monoxide detectors
- Wireless indoor sirens
The easy-to-use RPMAnetworks fire safety solution’s highly-advanced technological components connect with its Smart Control Panel, which provides audible warning alerts.
Bee: Can you cite some examples to how the features can be integrated with other extensions for safety?
Jan: The Smart Fire solution also comes equipped with a high-power built-in strobe light that provides residents with clear visual alerts, giving them ample time to evacuate before the fire spreads.
There is an opportunity for device manufactures as well as facility owners who wish to learn more about how to incorporate RPMAnetworks smart fire solutions backed by the capabilities of the Pelion Edge gateway to hear from Jan alongside Deepak Poornachandra in more detail.
