Smart Fire: The Challenges and Opportunities in Using IoT for Fire Safety

Bee Hayes-Thakore, in conversation with Jan Olsen, RPMAnetworks on how facility owners can leverage smart fire systems as a starting point for building automation.

Fires are fiercely destructive and, when not regulated in time, threaten human life and can damage or destroy valuable property within minutes. In the past year alone, approximately 784 fire-related incidents were reported in the UAE. Uncontrolled home fires claim many lives each year. Sixty-two percent of reported home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms or no smoke alarms at all.

The best precaution against fires are working fire alarm systems. Most of us will be familiar with these in our homes, and with more sophisticated systems integrated into emergency exit routing at our workplaces. Even still, many houses and facilities undergo significant damage from fires, despite having alarms, because of sensors that are inefficient or of unsatisfactory working quality.

IoT has an opportunity to tremendously improve this safety-critical element of our building real-estate.
